Get Out of the Boat

Walking on Water: A Lesson in Faith and Trust
In Matthew 14:22-33, we find a powerful story about faith, trust, and stepping out of our comfort zones. This account of Jesus walking on water and Peter's bold step of faith provides crucial lessons for our spiritual journey.
Understanding the Context: From Miracle to Storm
The disciples had just witnessed Jesus feed 5,000 people with a few loaves and fish. They weren't just observers - they participated in distributing the food and collecting leftovers. This miracle demonstrated Jesus's ability to turn what seemed insufficient into abundance.
After this spiritual high, Jesus sent the disciples across the Sea of Galilee by boat. They soon found themselves in a physical storm that tested their faith.
Why Do We Struggle to Recognize Jesus in Our Storms?
Despite spending daily life with Jesus, the disciples failed to recognize Him when He walked on water toward their boat. Their circumstances - the wind, waves, and physical exhaustion - had blinded them spiritually. They even mistook Jesus for a ghost.
This reveals how our immediate circumstances can sometimes prevent us from seeing God's presence and control in our situations.
What Made Peter Different from the Other Disciples?
While all disciples were in the boat, only Peter requested to join Jesus on the water. His request showed:
Recognition of Jesus's authority
Willingness to step out in faith
Desire for a deeper experience with Christ

What Causes Our Faith to Falter?
Peter successfully walked on water until he shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm. Common faith-killers include:
Worries of this life
Desire for comfort over Christ
Holding too tightly to our plans
Fear of the unknown
Need for control

How Does God Grow Our Faith?
God provides several assurances when He calls us to step out in faith:
He brings us to where we are
He intercedes for us
He comes to us in our need
He helps us grow
He sees us through to completion

Life Application
Take time this week to evaluate your faith journey by asking yourself:
Where am I spiritually right now?
How is God calling me to step out of my comfort zone?
What am I holding onto that might be preventing deeper faith?

Challenge: Identify one area where God is calling you to trust Him more. It might be in your finances, relationships, career, or ministry. Make a concrete step this week to release control and trust God in that area.
Remember: Just as Jesus didn't let Peter sink when his faith faltered, He won't let you sink when you step out in faith. The key is keeping your eyes fixed on Him rather than the storms around you.
